Can a POA agent access a parent's crypto?

Last verified 2026-10-17 against the official sources linked below.

Short answer

Not easily, and usually not by logging in. The big crypto platforms don't offer ongoing POA agent access the way banks do. Coinbase requires its prior written approval to use an account for someone else. Kraken doesn't publish a POA process for personal accounts and says a personal account can't have two names. Robinhood doesn't offer POA as an account feature, but if the owner is incapacitated it will review POA documents and offer temporary help with requests.

California's new statutory POA form (AB 2199, effective January 1, 2027) adds optional powers over digital assets.

Step by step

  1. Make a list of where your parent holds crypto: exchanges, apps, or a self-held wallet.
  2. Don't log in with your parent's password. Kraken's own advice is: “Never allow anyone to create or manage an account on your behalf.”
  3. Coinbase: ask support in writing for its prior written approval process. See Coinbase power of attorney.
  4. Robinhood: in the app or on the web, go to Help → “I need access to an account as a third party” → “Power of attorney (POA) agent.”
  5. Kraken: contact support and ask how it handles a California durable POA for an incapacitated account holder.
  6. If your parent is signing a new POA, ask an attorney about the digital-asset powers in the new 2027 California form.
  7. Keep a log of every request, using our California POA checklist.

Quick questions

Can I log into my parent's crypto account with a POA?

The platforms say no. Coinbase requires prior written approval to act for a third party, and Kraken advises never letting anyone manage an account on your behalf. Robinhood offers case-by-case temporary assistance after reviewing POA documents.

Does the new California POA form cover crypto?

AB 2199's updated statutory form, effective January 1, 2027, includes optional authority over digital assets, using the meanings in California's Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act.
